28th Vesoul International Festival of Asian Cinema

The festival’s 28th edition opened on Feb. 1 with Iranian auteur Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s 2001 Cannes winner “Kandahar” and concluded on Feb. 8 with Kazakhstan filmmaker Yerlan Nurmukhambetov’s “The Horse Thieves. Roads of Time.”

Zhang Lu’s “Yanagawa” (China), Hong Sung-eun’s “Aloners” (South Korea) and Fujimoto Akio’s “Along the Sea” (Japan/Vietnam) were among the top award winners at FICA.

The guest of honor at the festival’s 28th edition was Japanese filmmaker Fukada Koji, who was presented with an Honorary Golden Cyclo for his stellar career at the opening ceremony.

The international competition jury was presided over by Leila Hatami, Berlin Silver Bear best actress winner for Asghar Farhadi’s Oscar-winning “A Separation.” Hatami was also accorded an Honorary Golden Cyclo for her body of work.   The NETPAC JURY was formed by Qazi Abdur Rahim (Chairman), Azizbek Mannopov and Kazutaka Watanabe.

And the Netpac Award was given to Aloners (Hong Sung Eun) South Korea "For pioneering artistic solutions to the nature of human interaction in the context of modern technological complexity and its encounter with universal problematics in an elegant and subtle manner."

The international jury accorded special mentions to Chung Mong - Hong’s Venice selection “The Falls” (Taiwan), Brillante Mendoza’s Busan Kim Ji Seok Award winner “Gensan Punch” (Philippines/Japan) and Yalkin Tuychiev “2000 songs of Farida” (Uzbekistan).

On the whole I liked very much the festival, it has a good atmosphere, more lively, with the venues fully packed, superb screening quality and there are chances to easily socialise with everyone. Probably the best festival I have attended.

Born in 1962, in Kolkata, India, graduated from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) he has been related to M-80 Radio and the famous comedians "Gomaespuma". Qazi is the first indian to be nominated to Spanish Film Awards for Best Original Music for the film "El Próximo Oriente". He is the founder- director of the prestigious Imagineindia International Film Festival in Madrid, now on it's 20th edition.

He has been jury at many festivals and is curator of festivals like Macta Women,s Film Festival, Rain International Nature Film Festival or Turkish Film Festival Madrid.

1. I entered the cinema through the theatre. I was an actor in our local theatre called Kanibadam, named after Tuhfa Fozilova. After working for five years, I decided to do a theatre director course. I graduated with honors and became a director. We successfully staged performances at international festivals.
